![]() It returns to the forefront with the need for explanations of decisions made by connectionist black boxes. Symbolic AI was the dominant paradigm of AI research from the mid-1950s until the late 1980s. The first half-day is an introduction to Artificial Intelligence from its beginnings in the fifties to the present day. It is the matter of Symbolic Artificial Intelligence, so-called in opposition to Connectionist Artificial Intelligence.ġst day: Artificial Intelligence & Knowledge Representationĩ:30 am - 12:00 am: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence An explicit representation of knowledge in a formalism that can be understood by both humans and machines is necessary. There are also domains where it is necessary to explain and justify decisions taken by machines: economics, medicine, and military applications, to name a few. Indeed, it is not enough to be fast and efficient. But "human intelligence is much more than just pattern recognition, and Artificial Intelligence is much more than just Machine Learning (cyc.com). It is nowadays most often associated with Deep Learning based on neural networks. Artificial Intelligence is at the heart of many applications and technological innovations in various domains: medicine, smart city, economics, digital humanities, etc. It has become efficient thanks to the technical progress made in computing power and storage capacity. It will introduce students/researchers to the languages of knowledge representation and standards of the Semantic Web, especially those necessary for building ontologies.Īrtificial Intelligence is back in fashion. The second one is to master the concepts, skills, technologies and tools underlying Knowledge Representation. The first goal of this course is to understand the role that Symbolic Artificial Intelligence plays in the Digital Society and the Semantic Web. ![]() To validate the acquired knowledge, the seminar will include hands-on practice on building ontologies using dedicated software (CmapTools, Protégé). The course will be illustrated with examples taken from Digital Encyclopaedias (DBpedia, the knowledge graph of Wikipedia), Government Data (European portal), Research Data (HAL), Smart City, Cultural Heritage (Europeana, National Library of France). The focus will be on Ontology of Knowledge Engineering a kind of Knowledge Graph using standards of the Semantic Web. This doctoral seminar is an introduction to Symbolic Artificial Intelligence and more precisely on Knowledge Representation expressed in a human-understandable and machine-actionable formalism.
